The steering committee is a team of dedicated individuals who help guide the organization in its decisions. In addition to their leadership roles, the steering committee regularly meets with one another to encourage interdisciplinary thinking and communication. Tanmoy Newaz is an undergraduate student at the University of Calgary studying Cellular, Molecular, and Microbial Biology. Tanmoy founded COUHR in 2018 and served as CEO until stepping down in November of 2020.

Oliver Zhou

Oliver is a student at Western University entering his third year of the Bachelor of Medical Sciences program. As COUHR London's founding Editor in Chief of The InScight from 2020-2021, Oliver and his team of reviewers have produced concise, educational infographics on trending topics in public health and medical research. Having become Co-president and Coordinator of Research Affairs, he is looking forward to making a difference in the lives of underrepresented science students with his accomplished team. Outside of COUHR, Oliver is a piano enthusiast and research assistant at Western's Music and Neuroscience Lab, where he helps investigate the effect of music and its rhythms on how the brain controls movement.

Jeffrey is a second-year Rotman Commerce Student at the University of Toronto specializing in finance and economics. As the Chief Financial Officer for COUHR, Jeffrey leads the finance committee at the regional and national level, providing the necessary resources needed for each division, as well as ensuring overall financial stability within the organization. In his spare time, he enjoys playing sports and cooking.

Alex is an Honours Cellular, Molecular and Microbial Biology major at the University of Calgary and has been a volunteer with COUHR since early 2019. Alex leads the COUHR National Human Resources Committee, which is primarily responsible for the organization and maintenance of COUHR volunteer roles and volunteer applications. Other responsibilities include creating and amending contracts, rubrics and organizational handbooks for each COUHR committee in collaboration with respective committee directors.

Emily is an incoming fifth year student at Western University who is pursuing a dual degree between Ivey Business School’s Honours Business Administration program with a Certificate in Sustainability and Western’s Honours Specialization in Media, Information, and Technoculture program. From 2020 to 2021, Emily was the founding VP Marketing for COUHR London and spent the year establishing the chapter’s social media presence on Instagram and Facebook. With this experience, Emily is excited to be stepping into the role of Co-President and Coordinator of Student Affairs and continuing to work with her talented team at COUHR London. Having worked as a Medical Affairs and Communications Intern at Sanofi and a Diabetes Marketing Intern at Eli Lilly, Emily is passionate about providing opportunities across industries to underrepresented students who have an interest in science. In her free time, Emily enjoys working with animals and has two dogs, two cats, and a rabbit of her own.

Alina is the Co-President of COUHR Toronto at the University of Toronto. She is a fourth year student, double majoring in Anthropology and Psychology. Over the years, COUHR Toronto has hosted a variety of workshops and events aimed to provide opportunities to the student population. Although 2020/2021 has been a bit different, they are still providing students with opportunities to gain the skills they need to succeed. COUHR Toronto hopes to be able to provide more and more opportunities for the student population at UofT and have fixed programs in place in the near future!
